The Mungalla Experience
This is the story of Australia’s most accessible and authentic Indigenous experience. It’s a story of a successful Indigenous enterprise, a multi-award winning tourism destination and an iconic Australian cattle station.
Kup Murri Dining Experience with live contemporary indigenous music
(5:30pm -8:00pm): $65.00
Over dinner, enjoy the light entertainment of acoustic blues, folk, country and rock styles mixed uniquely from our local Indigenous rock stars. Kup-Murri are traditional underground overs which do more than just cook food, they bring a community together to produce a meal. The food prepared in a Kup-murri has a beautiful rich flavour, as it is slow cooked underground on rocks that have been heated in a fire all afternoon.
Early European settlers watched how Aboriginal people made breads in their Kup-murri. Seeds were ground into flour, water was added then the dough was cooked in the coals from the fire. These were the original dampers from the bush.
Mungalla Aboriginal Tour
(2pm – 5:30pm): $70
Mungalla Aboriginal Tours shares the land’s history from its pre-contact days as traditional lands of the Nywaigi people through to the recent return of the land to the traditional owners. Throughout the tour physical sites on the property are incorporated into the telling of stories relating to the property’s mixed Aboriginal, South Sea Islander and European heritage. The tour provides a contemporary insight into indigenous culture through powerful, tragic, but ultimately uplifting stories of Indigenous Culture.
The history of the Nywaigi people stretches for 60,000 years. The history of this land includes the Dreaming stories, European occupation, the growth of the Mungalla cattle station, slavery and captive life, birds and crocodiles, boomerangs and didgeridoos, land care and restoration, and celebrating Mungalla today.
